Aquilon Employees Volunteer at the Houston Food Bank

Blog BannerAquilon’s Houston office is home to our sales, implementation, and customer success teams. Get them in the same room and the level of enthusiasm gets dangerously high. Needless to say, they enjoy spending time together in and out of the office.

When the idea to volunteer as a group came up, everyone was on board. But which worthy cause should they choose? The blood bank had too many needles for some. The dog shelter needed a long-term commitment. Raising money to provide school supplies to underserved kids was a contender. Clarke Lamb, an Implementation Specialist, suggested the Houston Food Bank and the choice was made.

Texas is Huge. So is the Houston Food Bank.

HFB Stats for Blog 2Of all the stereotypes that drive Texans crazy (cowboys on horses everywhere), there’s no denying that Texas is a very big place, and so it should be no surprise that it is home to America’s largest food bank. The Houston Food Bank serves 18 counties in the Southeast Texas area, distributing 122 million meals through its network of 1,500 community partners, feeding 800,000 individuals each year.

A food bank collects and distributes food to hunger relief charities. Grocery stores, distributors, wholesalers and farmers donate thousands of pounds of food – food that may otherwise be thrown away.

The Houston Food Bank warehouses the donated food. Then, with help from volunteers like the Aquilon team, they sort, pack and redistribute the food to member agencies who are responsible for how the food is distributed to individuals.

Aquilon team members quickly made friends and had a great time working with other volunteer groups that evening. After volunteering for 4 hours the team wrapped up the evening by sweeping the warehouse, wiping down counters, and emptying the trash. They are proud to serve their community and are planning on going back soon! Thank you, Houston colleagues. You do us proud.
